The Ultimate No-Splurge Carry-On Packing List For Universal Orlando
There’s an art to packing for a theme park trip..
For 4 days and 3 nights at Universal Orlando including Islands of Adventure and the new EPIC Universe, this carry-on list is strategic and learned from trial and error — built to save time, money, and unnecessary weight so you can focus on your escape from the banality that is the real world.
Universal Orlando is not a “wear it twice” in a weekend environment. Unless you are one of the chosen few we've all see at the parks - with the perfect makeup all day (how HOW?!)
This list is for the rest of us! 🐦
Between the humidity, troll doll hair, the unforgiving walking, and the water rides, you will be hot. A lot. Plan for outfit rotation accordingly. Lightweight fabrics, breathable layers, and at least one backup top per day will save you from feeling swampy by 2 p.m.
The ultimate pack light, budget Universal Orlando packing list. Let’s-a-go! 🌟
Part 1: It’s the Little Things 🦜
These are the items that make the difference between “great trip” and “why am I like this.”
Ibuprofen or Tylenol. My legs are always aching after trudging around, speed walking to rides. And great to have for headaches.
Lip balm (I pack 2) Where’s my chapstick? I can’t find my chapstick!
Sunglasses: Cheap ones.
Disposable ponchos (one or two per person)
Unless the forecast shows steady rain — in that case, buy one of the Universal ponchos. They’re surprisingly affordable, decent quality, and far more tolerable than a clingy emergency poncho in 90% humidity.
Band-aids: Blisters happen. Onward...
Starbucks instant coffee sachets: Skip the 30-minute line and the $8 cup. Make it in your room.
Hair containment strategy: Headbands, a baseball cap, and extra hair ties. The troll-doll effect is real.
Bathroom bag essentials 💗
Tampons (daylight robbery inside the park).
Travel-size shampoo and conditioner — essential. The complimentary hotel ones are optimistic at best.
Travel-size face wash.
SPF moisturizer for face and body (decant from your big bottle into a small container).
Basic makeup — it will melt off, but we try.
Hairbrush
Non aerosol sunscreen carry on size.
Our HHN essential matching tees. Probably my favorite year to date.
Part 3: Sleep / Room Life
Thin pajama pants
3 lightweight tees for sleeping or hanging out in the room/collapsing after 12 miles of walking
3 park tees - one per day. Plus one backup total.
This is where it can get unhinged quickly — in a fun way. My best friend and I coordinate matching shirts (especially for Horror Nights). Highly recommend.
And here’s the strategy:
If you think you’ll “need” another shirt, budget to buy one as a souvenir. You were going to end up in the gift shop anyway…
3 pairs breathable running shorts. I usually get the Old navy ones - soft, light and perfect length.
✈️Travel Outfit: Leggings or sweatpants + hoodie
Wear it on the flight down. Wear the exact same thing home.
Light Layers 2 thin long-sleeve tees
For early morning chill and aggressively air-conditioned restaurants. They roll up easily into your little over-the-shoulder park bag.
Undies: 2 per day. Just trust me.
Socks: fun sneaker/ankle socks (Target or Walmart themed ones are elite).
Bras: you wore one there, pack one extra.
Swimsuit or bikini for the pool
Toddler Sandals. Yes you read that right - this may be my second fave item. Dress your feet like a toddler. Comfy, squishy, made to get wet but - above all - how can you resist?! These (pic)are Reef - Cross Shore. A bit pricey at $80 but, with shoes, you get what you pay for and these are lifesavers. 🏝️

Part 4: The Adult Beverage Hack!
🦜Cocktail supplies (take it or leave it)
This part isn’t up everyone's alley but I’ll include it because it saves me and my (yes we’re in our 40’s) best friend a chunk of change on drinks in the room after a long day at the park.
You can fit 10-12ish mini plane bottles (like Smirnoff) in to a zip loc quart bag. The official rule is the bottles must be 3.4oz/100ml or less and the zip loc must close. We also pack the little sachets of cocktail/mocktail mixers. Buy some seltzer water from the hotel cafe area or even door dash it and voila - you’ve saved yourself $20 per drink ten times!
All of this fits in a standard size carry on. In your over shoulder park bag, also your travel bag will be your wallet, phone, charger, headphones for plane and airport.
I always take my Luna Lovegood wand. Takes up a bit of space in my bag but it adds to the magic.
Lastly but most importantly, we don’t go to Universal without E.T. He’s old now and has cataracs from being stuffed in the ride lockers but he loves to see his family 😉
Packing for Universal isn’t about perfection. It’s about strategy. It’s about staying comfortable enough to actually enjoy the magic instead of thinking about your blisters, your melted mascara, or the $18 drink you didn’t need after the cocktails you bought in the park. Pack light and clever. Leave room for a souvenir tee and a little chaos. The real goal is simple: four days, three nights, and a temporary suspension of real life — sweaty, slightly feral, and very happy.
And remember - Beeeeee Good!
